Here’s our shortlist:

  • Cimarron National Grasslands – in southwestern Kansas. Walk along the river with its beautiful cottonwood gallery; view lesser prairie-chicken dancing through a blind.
  • Comanche National Grasslands – in southeastern Colorado. Hike to the fantastic dinosaur tracks along the Purgatoire River in Picketwire Canyon; walk Picture Canyon and observe ancient rock art; go for a swim at Carrizo Creek campgrounds.
  • Kiowa National Grasslands – in northeastern New Mexico. Enjoy this beautiful, rugged canyon, with Mills Creek flowing at the bottom.
  • Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site – just east of La Junta, CO. This is a must-see for western history enthusiasts. The grounds also but up against a lovely stretch of the Arkansas River.
  • Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site – east of Eads, in Kiowa County, CO. While the site’s significance came from tragedy, this is vital history to know.
