The Southern Plains
Land Trust recognizes the immense and immediate need
to preserve the declining shortgrass prairie ecosystems of the Great Plains.
We utilize the strategy of land acquisition and restoration coupled with
a strong outreach program and support for public lands reform.
SPLT celebrated the purchase of our first block
of this reserve network in November 1998: a 1,280 acre parcel in Baca County,
Colorado three miles north of the Comanche National Grassland. We named
this property "Fresh Tracks" to acknowledge
the welcomed sight of native
animal tracks on the land and to signify a new path toward land management
on the Plains, one where wildlife is respected for it own intrinsic value.
Currently, there are 3,200 acres of protected land within SPLT's
Prairie Reserve Network.
Relax with Bison & Help SPLT! Spend a weekend at a southeastern
Colorado bison ranch and help prairie wildlife. The bed and breakfast
weekend package includes two nights at the Last Gulch Ranch; catered
meals; and a guided tour of Fresh Tracks, Marianne Rees Nature
Preserve, and area birding and wildlife hotspots by a SPLT board
member or seasoned naturalist. Cost is $350 for two people or $700
for four. Transportation to bison ranch not included. Contact SPLT
board member Jennifer Melton at jenmelton99@yahoo.com or 303-642-3998
for more information.
If you are interested in joining with SPLT friends who are looking to
acquire more land, please let us know, so we can put you in contact
with our network of conservation buyers. You can help SPLT and prairie
wildlife by buying land, and then donating to either the land or a
conservation easement on the land to SPLT. Contact

SPLT is organizing site visits to different parts of the Comanche
National Grassland (over 400,000 acres in southeast Colorado), which
is managed by the US Forest Service. The Service is revising the
management plan for the grassland and now is our opportunity to
advocate for better management to protect native animals and
plants. If you have the time to participate in this effort, please
email us for more information: splt@southernplains.org.
