DON AND LOLLY MING
MONITORING FRESH TRACKS, AND RRG BISON PASTURE
FOR: SOUTHERN PLAINS LAND TRUST / NICOLE ROSMARINO
JUNE THRU NOVEMBER 2007
RRG:
We checked water at least two times a week. The tanks were usually full, but if they were a little low, we went back to check the next day or so. The Bison got out into the neighboring pasture - I think the Bison bulls liked the looks of those cows across the fence and, so, went visiting. Anyway, the Bison were out, the cows got in, the Bison got out and the cows got in again. We got them straightened out and fixed the fence. The water in the tank got low and the tank didn’t fill back up like it should. We called Nicole, she called Robert, he called us and came down and put another tank in so there is more storage now.
One day in October we checked the water and the tire tank was empty and the other tank down a few inches. We called Robert. He had drained the tire tank to clean it out and forgot to tell us. We had turned the water back on so, Robert had to drain it again.
We saw the Bison at least two times a week. The most exciting thing that happened here was the new calf born in June. Now, in November, the calf has grown to be a big calf. The Bison all look good and have a nice winter coat ready for the cold weather.
We went over the fence on the west side and stretched it and put new clips on where needed.
FRESH TRACKS:
There was little activity on Fresh Tracks this summer. We checked it several times a week all summer. We also went around the fence and repaired and stretched it on the west and south sides. Southern Plains and Robbins each paid half of the labor and cost of posts.
The county graded road JJ once. Cattle were hauled out of Robbins the middle of October and other than that there was very little traffic through there. Robert and Dan came by one day and they had been up there the day before and said they thought it looked good.
BOTH PLACES:
Grass was good all summer due to all the snow and early rains we had. From July on it was dry so the grass dried up, but there was still plenty of it. The wild flowers were beautiful all summer.
As usual, we saw lots of birds and there are still some Prairie Dogs. Due to last winter’s bad snow, there were not as many antelope as usual. Still we saw antelope quite often, as well as fox, rabbits and other small animals. Due to the scarcity of antelope, there were no hunters to be seen this season.
Both places are in good shape and ready for winter. It was a good summer on the plains, but is very dry now.
